Football fans and craft market traders have a few things in common. Both know dizzying highs of success and the crushing loss of disappointment. Both start their weekends full of hope and excitement. If you are a Prescot Cables follower like myself, optimism is vital.
I've been trading my artwork for two years now. My early markets were pretty ramshackle. I just had a few cards and a couple of prints and my display needed a lot of improvement.
You have to be prepared for anything at markets. I was chasing prints across a field in high winds. I forgot my table at another and borrowed one from a pub. Children can be a hazard. I've had a few frames broken due to juvenile excitement.
The highs can be making new friends and allies among the makers and artists. We all support and help each other at events. I enjoy making my own displays. Collecting driftwood has given me ideas for shelving. I've learned a few carpentry skills. My stall is improving at each market. I've learned a great deal from other makers.
The art of selling isn't natural to me but I've met some lovely people who actually like my work enough to buy and some come back for more! Thank you to all the customers who care enough to support artists and makers. It's a tough financial year for everyone and I'm very grateful for the support.
