Sketching

Sketching

The starting point for all my artwork is my sketch book.

I take a sketch pad and a few fine liner pens wherever I go. I'm always on the lookout for inspiration. I enjoy sketching at the coast. Most people are too absorbed in their surroundings to notice me scribbling away.

The trick is to get the scene I'm seeing down quickly and with the minimal of lines. It's my favourite way of working. I try not to think about what I'm doing or pause, I let my sight and hands take over.

Sketching in pen and ink gives the drawings energy. You can't go back with ink, just keep going. It doesn't matter to me if I make mistakes, I just want a diary of memories captured on paper.

Some of my sketches are starting points for illustration ideas. My skater girl design started as a sketch of a cool girl browsing the tables at a craft market. It's one of my favourite images. Never forget your sketch book, you never know what you might create in a tea break.
